A Glance at the 2019 UX

Just finally arriving here at Lexus of Wichita, the Lexus UX is the newest crossover in the Lexus lineup, and it’s truly something to talk about (or write, in this case). Built to compete, per the chief engineer on the UX Chika Kako, “against segment competitors, including the first-generation BMW X1,” the UX is a radical take on Lexus engineering; a more compact form and striking lines, incredibly efficient pricing, and all the classic Lexus traits of a comfortable ride and spacious seating inside ensure customer’s from your faithful Lexus driver to newcomers into the market will have their needs met. And both those markets are exactly who the UX is built for, with the acronym title UX being the shortened version of ‘Urban Explorer’.

And this urban explorer doesn’t slack on the road, from drive quality to performance. Powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine (in the UX 200 model), the UX is able to produce 169 horsepower, more than enough to power the compact crossover and all passengers around town and still feel nimble. Moving to the body size, at 177 inches long and with only a 103.9 inch wheelbase, the UX stays extremely maneuverable and easy to handle. Yet, Lexus engineering and high-quality materials ensure that no matter whether you’re cruising at highway speeds or stuck in downtown traffic, the ride is quiet as expected of a Lexus, not to mention as soft.

Stylistically, the UX continues to utilize the hourglass grill that has become a Lexus staple, but the spindle mesh as part of the grill and intelligently designed lines up-front ensure that the grill accents the vehicle’s identity, instead of overruling it. Sharp headlamps and tall air intakes finish off the front end, creating an aggressively refined accent to the front. Where the UX truly shines from a visual standpoint though, is towards the rear hatch; the overhanging roofline above the rear windshield creates a slick, aerodynamic visual, with pointed tail lights that wrap around the UX rear end with a sharp point, instilling an almost futuristic feel. Finally, creasing on the sides of the UX creates an illusion of the UX being slimmer than other crossover counter parts, even though passengers will find the interior space so spacious.

With the cabin being the place most owner’s will spend their time, Lexus had made sure to not cut corners, even with the lowered price tag. Mimicking its older sibling, the UX pulls on NX and RX cues with the same steering wheel and controls, embedded infotainment screen with smart, touchpad controls, and centrally locate climate controls with enough switches for any techno-geek. Yet, a larger shifter and accenting lines throughout the interior show a more modern style, while the instrument display utilizes a more digital style compared to previous analog displays used in other Lexus models. Interior seat options include both cloth and leather, with a range of simple and complex color schemes to match any driver’s needs.
